Strengthening Australia's response to modern slavery in supply chains

AFIA supports the Government’s objective of strengthening Australia’s response to modern slavery.

However, the submission highlights that finance providers have limited visibility and influence over upstream sourcing and production activities, and therefore any new ‘failure to prevent’ offence should be proportionate, risk-based and aligned to an organisation’s actual capacity to identify, influence and prevent harm.

AFIA calls for a clear nexus test, a practical reasonable steps defence, sector-specific guidance, government-supported traceability mechanisms and a minimum two-year transition period before commencement.
